Diesel generators are generally preferred for industrial use; they are powerful, robust and long-lived. They are used on large-scale projects and where continuous power is needed, and require regular maintenance. Natural gas generators run on natural gas or propane and stand out for their low emissions and lower long-term running costs.
Mobile generators are offered from 45 kVA to 660 kVA at 50 Hz 400 V, and from 36 kVA to 700 kVA at 60 Hz 208 V. Biogas models use the low-flammability methane recovered from organic waste. Petrol generators offer portability and light weight for small-scale, short-duration needs. Hybrid sets are configured to requirement across a wide power range and help reduce running costs.
There are two fundamental generator types. Alternators convert mechanical energy into alternating current (AC) using a rotating magnetic field and a fixed conductor winding; internal combustion engines, turbines or hydraulic systems may serve as the prime mover. Dynamos produce direct current (DC) using a rotating conductor winding within a fixed magnetic field.
Applications are wide: continuous power in factories, industrial plants and construction sites; standby supply in homes, offices and commercial premises; emergency generators that start automatically on supply failure in critical facilities such as hospitals, fire stations and military installations; and portable units where there is no grid supply at all.
Generator selection depends on the energy required, the intended use and the budget. The correct rating is determined by calculating the total power consumption of the equipment to be supplied; capacity is normally expressed in kilowatts (kW).
