Load Break Switch Incoming/Outgoing Panel

The load break switch incoming/outgoing panel is the basic panel type that connects the busbar to the cable in a medium voltage distribution network. Its main switching device is a load break switch: thanks to its arc suppression arrangement, the circuit can be opened and closed while on load.

An earthing switch is fitted on the cable side of the load break switch. Before maintenance the cable is earthed through this switch, and a mechanical interlock prevents the earthing switch from closing while the load break switch is closed. This interlock is the fundamental safety feature of the panel.

It is chosen at points that do not require a circuit breaker, where protection is provided from a higher level of the network. Compared with its circuit breaker equivalent it is more economical and takes up less space.

Typical use: distribution substation incomers, compact transformer substations and ring network supply points.
